Sex and sexuality are important components of health. For many, sex is an integral part of life. Sex can be
pleasurable, fun and exciting. Unfortunately, sex can also lead to health consequences such as a variety of
sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), some of which can be fatal. Sexual activity can also result in an
unwanted pregnancy. It is estimated that 25% of youth will have at least one STD before they reach the age of
25. Close to one-third of unmarried women in Canada between the age of 18 and 24 have had an unwanted
pregnancy. Fortunately, there are effective ways to reduce the risk of these consequences through safer sex
practices.
